80% of antibiotics sold in the US used on animals!

January 3, 2011

Wired is reporting that 80% of the antibiotics sold in the United States were sold for use on animals (factory farms pump the animals full of drugs to try and prevent disease with so many animals crammed together). These drugs are by-and-large the exact same drugs that humans take when ill. So, as Wired points out: “When organisms become resistant on the farm to drugs used on livestock, they are becoming resistant to the exact same drugs used in humans.”

If you’re not familiar with the many evils of factory farms, check out Peta’s page on factory farming, and take action.

Also make sure to check out the fantastic movie, Food Inc. which sheds light on what these farms are doing behind the scenes.
